Just when every man and woman cf us should be working.every day iind all the time, the Government brings forward this Anzac Day proposal K> induce the people to stand about and kse a day's work that can ill b;; spared."—Councillor C'atley, at Saturday's meeting of Horowhenua County Council. At an interview betyeen representatives of Levin and Horowhenua Councils and Dr Valintine, chief of the 'Health Department, Dr. V-alintine intimated that he would raise no objection to Horowhenua County being attached to Palmerston Noith hospital district. This report was made to the council at last meeting of 'Horowhenua Coun- j ty Council, by the chairman (Councillor Monk). The council resolved to initiate steps for approaching the Palmerston .North Hospital Board. Two soldiers, an Englishman and a Highlander, -were sitting in a picture house not a hundred miles from Glasgow, when tlie battle of' the Somme film was being shown. At the part when you see the English regiments going over the parapet the English soldier said: "Where are all tlie Jocks now, the men who get the name of doing all the figlitingP" "Awa' ye ye eediot. They're up in the front line liauldin' the Germans tae let thae English chaps get their photo ta'en." The National 'Efficiency Board's circular was briefly discussed at Horowliewhenua County Council on Saturday. 'It was stated that all of the council's men were in the second division, and the county engineer added that not more than one or two would be in the recond division unless the age limit was altered. The council resolved to give all the support it could to the 'hoard's proposal. Tlie Telegraph Department notifies that no free telegram of inquiry regarding progress of a wounded or sick soldier will be accepted within seven days of the date that is stamped on the official notification of the casualty, and a further fourteen days must elapse before the second and third enuiry telegram can be aant. Tlie Postal Department advises that that maximum weight for parcels to soldiers is now 71b. The rates of postage iare up to 31bs Is, over 31ibs and not exceeding 71bs 2s. In view of the exceptional conditions of transit involving several transhipments and exposure to great heat it is necessary that parcels for the Expeditionary Force should be very strongly and firmly packed. The contents should' not l>e movable by any ordinary handling. The address should be written on at leatt two sides of the parcel.

Levin Terminating Building Society's meeting convened for last week failed to. attract a quorum. Consequently the £300 available for disposal by tender (free of interest) could not be disposed of. The executive of the Society cannot but feel dissatisfied with this display of laxity by the members of the Society.. The meeting stands adjourned without fixed date.
The marriage is announced of Cor- £ poral A. Stuckey, of Levin, to -Mies j 'Maxwell', of Levin, The ceremony j took place oh Easter Monday. On Friday night, Mr Harry George was motoring to his home at Levin," >accompi'nicd by his wife and children. When on the main road near the Waitoliu bridge he ran over a cow in the middle of the road. Fortunately none of the passengers were hurt, and tho car escaped with comparatively littlo damage. This furnishes an. instance of the danger caused by wandering stock. Fresh eggs were sold at 2s 9d per dozen wholesale in Wellington last Saturday. Arrangements are being made in Horowhenua County and Levin to approach Pa' mereton N'orth Hospital Board with a view to a transfer of this district from the Wellington Hcspital Board to the Palmerstbn Board. There is no chance of the matter being arranged in time for submission of a bill to Parliament this session, but iprobably the enabling bill will be ready for next year's session, if Pa"merston North board is agreeable. A former decision of Levin Borough Council to change tho name of Wernroa road to "Anzr.c road" was revived by Councillor France at last night's meeting of the council when Councillor France moved that the. amended name | nlate be procured and put in position on Anzac Day of this year. The proposal was supported by Councillors Foisella and Herrick. The mayor doubted whether a council in its dying hours should change the name of a street as its last legislative effort. The name Woiaron-road appeared on title deeds :>nd land records, and it seemed to him obo name should not lie lightly altered. Councillor France : "The council has resolved it long ago!" After a long search of the minute book the town ••'ork failed to find the motion referred tx>. Councilor Robertson said that before the name could be changed it would be necessary to advertise the intention and 1 to hear objections. The mayor said lie felt sure that the position arrived at was that "further enquiries be made" ;there was no motion passed, he felt sure. Eventually, after ; -i further search the town clerk found i th? mot : on—moved by Councillor France, 6ec~nded by Councillor Herrick —agreeing to change the name of the ■ street to Anzac-street. A vote was 5 taken at this stage, and the motion to 1 procure the name plates, and' affix them 1 nest Anzac Day was carried, the mayor > nnd Councillors Jones and Harvey dis--5 sonting.
