Levin Borough Council
ORDINARY MONTHLY MEETING. T!he final meeting of the present Levin Borough Council was held last night, Mr. C. Blenkhorn, mayor of Levin, presiding. ' There also were present Councillors H. B. France, A. Dempsey, J. Robertson, S. Jones, J. Harvey, E. M. Herrick, M. Fosella. AN'ZAO DAY. It was re-_olved that Anzac Day be celebrated on the true day (Wednesday, 25th "April), and that the proceedings take the same nature as those of last year, when a religious service was held in the street, and patriotic speeches were delivered. The business people and citizens are to be asked to observe the day as a holiday. DEARER COAL. An advance of two shillings per cwt in the price of coal to 'be supplied to Levin Municipal Gasworks was notified by the Westport Coal Company An extra outlay of about £100 will be occasioned to the gasworks by this increase in charges. An extended report by the manager of the gasworks (Mr Bun-ell) was read to the council, and was favorably commented upon by the mayor and Ooun-. cillor Fosella. The report will be ; published in next Thursday's Chronicle. In submitting the report, the Town Clerk said the gasworks were in a very satisfactory position; he thought no councillor fully realised the arduous amount of work done by Mr Bu'.rell. The works had been made profitable, although r.n extra £200 had been spent consequent upon the enhanced price of coal. ROAD MAKING. Councillor France reported that the use of the traction engine and grader in Bartholomew road had been a great success. He recommended an extension of the practice to other roads of a like nature. Councillors expressed satisfaction with the success of the experiment. VALEDICTORY. The mayor remarked tha.t after an association of about two yeavs, the present council and himself were about to vacate office. Whatever"might have been tlie'ir mutual shortcomings, "Mr. Blenkhorn was sure that lie and they all had been imbued with a spirit that led them to seek {lie good of the town. They had had their personal differences, of opinion; they would not have been worth their salt if they had not; but he was sure they all had done their best. He tlianke.l ccu"ci'lors for their loyal support of him; he was quite honest when he said he thoroughly appreciated the way in which they 1-ad helped him.
