A pairs tourney was played on iLevin Bowling Club's green during the Easter holidays. Ten players entered, and some cloee and enjoyable games resulted. Porteoue and 'Lancaster went through undefeated.

At Levin on Sunday last a military funeral was accorded to tlie late Sapper (Hogan, who died at Wellington as a Tesult of experienced while on active service. 'Levin Town Band and Levin Salvation -Army (Band played the Dead March from "Saul" as til© cortege moved to the cemetery. The mourners included representatives of the Reinforcements now in camp in New Zealand, and there was a large following of friends. The Rev. G. B. Stephenson read the funeral service. Sapper Hogan was a member of the 13th New Zealand .Reinforcements, and was 41 years of age. Levin Terminating Building Society will hold its adjourned general meeting in the Druids' Hall next Thursday. A sum of £300 free of interest will tie disposed of by tender. The United States of America has made quite clear the uncompromising nature of lier present state of war with Germany. The 3GI German vessels in American waters have been seized; the navy is being mobilised; and an Army Bill provides for the raising of one million men in the second year. An expeditionary force of five thousand men is to ibe sent to the "Western front in Europe forthwith. Heavy taxation to meet the cost of the war is being shaped. The Labor Federation has promised the Government all the skilled workmen' that may be needed. An extraordinary general meeting of shareholders in Levin Co-operative Dairy Company, Ltd., will be held on Friday, 20th April. Full datails are' set out by advertisement on page 3. The meeting wil be held in the Century Hall, Levin.

The Grand Duke Nicholas of Russia is now on his estate in the Crimea, wliero ho is under surveillance by the representatives of the provisional Government of Russia. Major Burljnson, who for many years past lias been in charge of the Boys' Training Farm, Wereroa. left Levin for Auckland last week-end. 'He has been granted a well-earned holiday of three months on full pay. 11l addition to the classical dance items which promise to be such an attraction at to-morrow night's "send off" in Levin Town iHall to the men of the 28th Reinforcements, there will he some vocal items contributed: by Miss Kilsby of Makara, and Messrs l'orteous and Mottershead of Levin, whilst Miss Mabel Gray will give a recitation. Miss Dorothy Saunders' interpretation of the "Coster Dance" is regarded iu "Wellington circles as a particularly fine piece of work, and this item alone should prove to be "a big draw." It is anticipated that a crowded house will result to-morrow night, as many visitors from Manakau and Ohau have signified their intention of being present. An invitation is extended by the committee to all visiting soldiers at present on leave in Levin to turn out to tlie "send-off" to-morrow night, when they will he heartily welcomed.

A very successful demonstration was given last week in Mr. "W. Ingram's paddock, Levin, before an interested audience, by Mr F. Hawthorne, .representing the Atla6 Powder Company of Australia. Several stumps were blown out, one of tliem having been selected by jlr Ingram as the toughest proposition in the p fid do ok. This stump was 'blown completely out and portions weighing about half a ton carried a considerable distance. Later half a plug was used to show the use of the 'explosive for subsoiling. This resulted in the ground being completely pulverised for some feet round the hole. Several of those present pur-

chased case lots of explosives, realizing that it was money well spent. As this explosive is cheaper tHan any other in the market it will-* no doubt command a ready sale in-the district.

On Friday, evening next a public meeting will foe lield in Levin for the purpose of hearing municipal addresses. His "Worship the .Mayor (Mr C. Blcnkhorn) will give an address on civic matters that have arisen during his term as chief magistrate, and! an opportunity to address the gathering will he given to any candidate, for borough councillorship who may be disposed to state his views. The meeting will he held in the Century Hall.
