Concert at Ley in
« IN AID OF BELGIAN POOH. The concert, organized by Miss ißowen, in aid of the Belgian Relief Fund, was held in the King's Theatre, Levin on Thursday, the building being crowded to the doors. The function was altogether a success, and a substantial sum of money was netted as an addition to the fund already raised by means of the garden fete held early in March. The hall stage Ivas nicely decorated with several arches covered with greenery and flowers, and the painted effects also were pleasing. The first part of the program was as follows:— Overture, by orchestra: Mrs Nation, Miss Williamson, Mr Lester. Swing song, schoolgirls. Comic song (encored): Mr 'H. J. Jones (in costume. Recitation, "Maggie and the Beauty Parlour," iMiss Thompson. ISong, "A Perfect Day," Miss Blank. (Dialogue: "The Best Way to Help the Belgian Poor," schoolchildren. Song, "Marc'h, March, March," schoolboyis in khaki. This was very effective and pleasing. Recitation, Miss Bowen. Tableau by schoolohildren '((singing "Do Your Lttle Bt, Knd Trends.") During this item the audience threw coins on to the stage and into the flags carried round the liall. During the interval a doll given by Rita Farland was put up for auction
by Mr Farland. The following bids were made: Mr Blenkhorn, £1; Miss Bowen, Messrs Millie," Jhing Lee, Thompson, Mrs Nation, Mr Frechtling, senr., '10s; Mr T. Bevan £1; Messrs ffvess, Stratfcon, Carmoni, Farland, Palmer, Mrs R. Prouse, Miss Williams, Mrs J. Prouse, Mr Williams (Wairarapa) Mr Bevan, Mrs Thompson, Mrs fßetter senr., 4th Form school (per Mr Jones) each 10s. Standard IV. of Levin school agreed to subscribe 10s if they could have the doll. This was agreed to. Subsequently Mr Blenkhorn bought the doll from Standard IV and presented it to Rita Farland. A total of £11 was realized from the sale. A cake won by Mrs Vincent at the Ihakara fair was put up for auction and realized the sum of £1. Miss Bignall the last 'bidder, got the cake. A comic song (encored) was given here iby Mr H. J. Jones (in costume), and surprise ipackets were drawn by holders of the tickets. A kicky wahine drew the packet containing half a sovereign, and slie greeted her discovery with the remark "kapai tenei!" The cantata "Red Riding Hood" next followed. It was given with spirit. The parts were taken as follows : —Red Riding Hood, Miss Walker ; wolf, Mr Keys; woodman, Mr iH. J. Jones; woodman's wife, Mrs Gapper; "buttercup, Miss May White .(song, heartily applauded); rose, Miss Malcolm ; fairies, schoolgirls. The concert was a pronounced success and the promoters are deserving of hearty congratulation upos the success they acheivd. ■■■ i i'.Hi
