Levin and District Patriotic Society
MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. The executive of the above society met for the regular monthly meeting at the Borough Council Chambers last Friday night. Thu president, Mr Bienkhorn, occupied the cliair. A communication was received frum the Canterbury Patriotic Society asking for the refund of money paid in assisting the wife of a man lately residing at Levin, who was reported to have enlisted. It was decided to seek further information before taking any action. The lion, secretary oF tlio Countess Liverpool Fund wrote asking Levin to assist in providing a. share of the gift parcels for the men in the trenches which are dispatched each week. The Wellington military district is expected to provide 6000 parcels per month. Either money or made-up parcels could be sent to Wellington, and if money was sent it was suggested that printed cards bearing the name of the society shou'cl be supplied which could be placed in the parcels when made up in WeL Jingtcn. The treasurer (Mr Goldsmith) pointed out that there was £17 in hand which liad been left over from the appeal made at the time of Mrs Luke's visit for gift parcels. It was dee ded to promise a regular contribution of £5 per month to this purpose. The Ladies' Red Gross Committee suggested that they might be able to nrrang to devote one Saturday a month to this object when present funds were exhausted.
The secretary of the National Committee of the Y.M.C.A. wrote thanking the Levin Society for the donation of £5 recently sent them for their French Comfort Fund. The secretary of the Anzac Club, Palmerston North, wrote expressing their appreciation of the cheque 6ent them by the Levin Society towards the cost of entertaining the men who assemble there each month prior to leaving fox Trentham. Congratulatory refcnce was made by the chairman to the good work done by Mrs Richtor in compiling the cooker* hook, which is at present meeting a ready sale, in aid of the patriotic fund. Not only were the many hundred of recipes gathered by Mrs Richter. but aVo the advertisement and the cash for them. The return from advertisements more than covered the cost of printing, and over 300 books have already been sold. After passing for payment accounts amounting to £30 for Red Cross materials and Cardigan jackets, the meeting concluded.
