Bowling by Gaslight

PATRIOTIC TOURNAMENT AT LEVIN, The grounds of Levin Bowling Club were brilliantly illuminated last night, when the patriotic tourney arranged by Levin Bowling Club and Levin Ladies' Croquet' Club was begun. The mayor of Levin (Mr C. Blenkhorn) delivered a patriotic speech, in the course of which lie dwelt upon the need for sustained efforts in the interests of patriotic funds, and acknowledged the good work of the croquet and bowling clubs and their outside helpers in carrying out these functions. The .grounds were beautifully decorated,' and an al fresco tearoom with walls hung with greenery and bunting was especially striking. The produce land fancy work stalls all did good business, and various guessing competitions were attempted l with profit to the club. The tournament will he brought to a close this evening. The gasworks department of Levin Boroif&h Council is deserving of hearty congratulation upon the excellence of the lighting arrangements. The energetic secretary of the club and his band of assistants went to a lot of trouble in preparation fj?r the tournament, and it is satisfactory to note that profitable public patronage is being bestowed upon the function which undoubtedly will result in substantial additions to the credit balances of the Levin Branch of the Red Cross Society and the Horowhenua County Patriotic Fund, which a/re to share equally in the net profits. Numerous sideshows helped to enliven the proceedings and the Levin Brass Band and Mrs Bouid's orchestra contributed music throughout the evening. An excellent program of pathephone music was given by Mr Ken. Aitken. A word of proise is due to the caretaker of the green and his assistants for the keenness and true running of the links. The entire absence of dew made playing conditions perfect. All the attractions of last night will be repeated this evening and the public may depend upon passing an enjoyable time while witnessing the concluding stages of the bowling contest.
