The Magisterial enquiry into the stranding of the steamer Mararoa was concluded to-day. The Court found that the mishap was due to the unexpected easterly set of the cur-rent and to a dense fog, which prevented Captain Reid from ascertaining his posi-

wi;n with any degree of certainty; In u.e opinion of the Court the stranding was contributed by an error of judgment, on the pai t oi the captain, in failing to stop his ship at 8 a.m., in ti:e weather conditions then prevailing. The captain should have -allowed himself time in which to obtain some accurate soundings, and in that way have oaken all reasonable precautions to avoid stranding. The mishap was not due to any default on the part of die other officers or of the crew. The captain's certificate was returned to lull' but lie v.ms ordered to pay half the costs of tlie enquiry.
