[PBR PRESS ASSOCIATION.] PRICE OF NEWSPAPERS. TO BE INCREASED. Wellington, Tuesday. In the course of his presidential address to the annual conference of the Newspaper Proprietors' Association of Mr P. Selig said that newspaper owners had grave reason for concern regarding future paper supplies. Tlio first shock of the New Year was the failure of an essential shipment from Powell river, which was not now expected til March. Contracts made for 1917-18 are "freight at buyers' risk." Twelve months ago he had referred to the fact that the cost of output ol newspapers had gone up by and bounds. All! materials that enter into the production of a newspaper have continued to increase in pricc. The principal offices have had to face an increase in the price of news printing paper of nearly 125 per cent, compared with pre-war figures. Metal ink and other materials, also wages, and the cost of cable service and telegrams had also largely increased. All over the world somewhat similar conditions prevailed, and we must faqe here as elsewhere the question of
raising the selling price of papers to the public, to in some measure recoup these heavy additional expenses in production.
After a very full discussion by the largest meeting of newspaper i>roprietors lield in the Dominion for many years, lit 'was unanimously resolved, "That this meeting of members of the Newspaper Proprietor' Association of New Zealand is of opinion that in view of the enormous increase in the price of news printing paper, and the increased cost of material, and of working expenses in practically a|ll departments of newspaper production, the time has arrived when an increase in the selling price of New Zealand newspapers can no longer be avoided, such charge to corao into force on April 2nd."

Hamilton, Yesterday.
Angry scenes Were witnessed .Last I night at' a lecture on "Who Caused the War," by the Rev. Howard Elliott. The lecturer sought to show that Catholics throughout the world were in league against Britain, and lie was subjected to bitter interjections throughout. His declaration that the Pope was responsible for the present European conflict, in his anxiety to secure world domiination, (caused a tremendous outburst of invective, and the lecturer, who had difficulty in proceeding, ordered the police to remove several interrupters. At the conclusion of the lecture, a crowd waited for, and followed the lecturer, who had to be escorted by the police. He eventually escaped in a motorcar.
