The i'our-iweekly period expired 4th January last lias been marked by a diminution in the relative earning power of the New Zealand Railways, but it should be borne in mind that the corresponding period of 1916 was one in which very substantial increases in earning power were made, and this year's conparisons are obtained in contrast with the greater records achieved last year. In the light of this" fact, it is satisfactory to be able to record that in the nine mouths expired 6th January last the railway revenues of New Zealand maintain the upward tendency of the preceding nine months. The revenue from Ist April, 1915, to 6th January, 1916 was £3,366,685 7s Bd, by comparison with £3,582,6'11 6s 2d earned in the nine months expired on 6th January last. A further notable fact is that the expenditure rate continues to sliow diminution: for the 1915-16 period it was £2,229,705 10s 4d and for the period ended last January it fell to £2,187,150 16s 6d. Reverting to the latest four-weekly period, we note that an extraordinary decrease is that shown on the Gisborne. section, where the sheep railed during the four-weekly period ended 6tli Jannary 1817, foil by one half «s compared with the like period of 1916: 10,002 against 20,448. Total receipts on this section for the period fell by £700. Whangarei section fell by some £200, North Island main lines and branches by £2000, and South Island main lines and branches by £2000. Westland section dropped £1000, and Pieton section £80. The only sections that showed increases were Kaihu £150 and Lake "Whakatipu steamers £140.
