Levin Patriotic Society
The executive of the above society met on Monday night last, with Mr C. Blenkhorn (president) in the chair. A communication was read from the management committee of the Anzac Club, Palmerston North, asking for some financial assistance towards the cost of entertaining the men who are assembled each month prior to leaving the next morning for camp. As our local men ar-e amongst those who share the hospitality, .it was felt that the request was la reasonable one, particularly as dt provides the men with an opportunity of keeping together and being ready to leave the next morning. It was decided to make a grant of £3 3s from the general funds to tho club authorities.
A letter was received from the organizing secretary in New Zealand of the Barnado Homes pointing out the patriotic work being done by these homes in caring for great numbers of the little ones of men at the front, and expressing a wish that some special effort might be made in Levin to help (provide ' funds. The ladies committee of the Red Cross Society have intimated thiat they propose setting aside a "shop" day on Saturday, March 3rd, when a special effort will be made to raise a good sum, and it is hoped that the general public will respond also to the call. Donations may be left with Mr Goldsmith, who will remit all moneys to the proper authorities.
From the Y.-M.C.A. an appeal was also received asking for some assistance towards the French Comforts Fund inaugurated by them for the men au tli" front. A very vivid picture of the great discomforts being experienced by ch« fighting men was eon'?.ved in a little booklet issued by the Y.MC.A. in connection with the appeal. It was decided to vote £5 towards the object and it is also hoped that the public will further supplement the call.
The i'a! mors ton Ivoi'th Patriotic Society forwarded a communication which it had received from the Discharged Soldiers' Information Department, asking that the society endeavour to find a suitable clerical position for a returned discharged soldier. As the soldier in question had had no previous experience, and was a resident of Otaki, it was considered advisable to send the request to the Otaki Patriotic Society.
Accounts amounting to £53 10s, mainly for materials for Red Cross purposes and also for Cardigan jackets purchased, were passed for payment.
