Gancr _4 IS IT C (ARABLE? The following circular has been received by the 'Hospital and Charitable Aid Board from the Department of Health, and is to be exhibited in public places. I.—ln the public mind cancer is a foul and loathsome disease, and of so incurable a nature that death is inevitable and- sliould be welcomed to put •an" end to the pai'fi and suffering engendered thereby. 2.—But such is by no- means the case. The medical profession knows that,' so far from being incurable cancer is on© of the most curable diseases if only recognised early enough to give the patient a chance of obtaining appropriate treatment. 3. —Many a person is living in the Dominion to-day in whom the disease was recognised sufficiently oarly tallow tile cancerous 1 growth to be removed, and many a- person is Ifving who but for the early recognition of a predisposing cause would in all probability have contracted and siiccumbed to this disease. ■ Eveiything, therefore, depends upon the early recognition of this disease, so do not delay in obtaining medical advice. 5. Cancer in its early—and therefore curable—stages is unattended with pain and sometimes cecum without any sign of ill-health. 6.— On the other hand, signs of the disease are at times very apparent from the first. For example, the following signs or symptoms should be regarded as a possible indication of this disease.— .. (a) Any lump or swelling in the breast of a woman over thirty. (b) Any bleeding, however trivial, occurring about or after the "chancre of life." " (c) Any bleeding from the bowel, especially in persons over forty-five." l?eniember, bleeding firm the bowel is not always due to piles. (d) Any pimple, wart or sore recurring f , n the lip, tongue, or inside the mouth of any person over thirty. (©). Any pimple, wart, mole, or growth that seems to be changing j n appearance. (0 A jagged tooth should not be nillowed to irritate and mate the cheeks, lips or tongue sore. Sores made by such means, or ,bv ivith rough mouth-pieces, often take 'n a. cancerous character. (g) Permanent indigestion i s very often a symptom, as cancer of the stomach or bowel is a common form of this disease. In all instances outlined as above, medical advice {should !be speedily sought. Delay is not only dangerous —atelay may mean death. Many refrain from seeking advice from fear tvhereas in all probability lamina;ion by a surgeon or bacteriologist vill relieve theiir unnecessary anxiety. 7.—There i eno doubt that the very ncreasing mortality from thislie most terrible of all diseases of J ate iault life—can be stemircd to a verv jreat extent if people would only «ek medical, advice sufficiently early. For those who are not able to pay ■he usual medical fees the outpatient lepartments of our public hospitals i.ro always available, where the poorest in the land: can obtain the best oi idvice and treatment. B.—But above all place not faith in he various vaunted cures and nofr rums or the advertisements of unscrupulous and ignorant persons. ?here is only one cure for cancer, and hough in the early stages good results lave ibleen brought about 'by, the C-rays and 'radium, it is surgical lethods that we look to as most ceram means of curing this terrible disr ase. If you haVe any doubt about yourelf you must seek the advice of youi ledical practitioner or apply to the ledical l officer in charge of your local ospital. •Note.— Tliere is no evidence to supart the impression of some people t> the effect that cancer is infectious nd that the disease can be transmited from one person to another.
