The Chronicle LEVIN. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 1916. BOROUGH COUNCIL ELECTION'S.

The biennial election of borough councils will lje due in about two months time- In most boroughs the elections tu-tlie source of a mild excitement find of rivalry for the honor to be the burgesses' representatives fur civil matters; but in Levin the case is different. Usually there has to be a heating-up of citizens at the last hour to ensure the" nomination of sufficient candidates to constitute a full council ; and sometimes the nominations are subject to provisoes that there shall be witluliawal of certain papers in the event of more than nine nominations being arranged. Such a method of dealing with civic elections is not de-r-irahle; there should be developed in the people as a whole a higher regard for the real honor of holding municipal office than that at present manifest. There is little or nothing to find fault w-ith in the manner in which the present borough council has fulfilled : ts many duties; with an active membership dwindled from nine to seven it lias conducted the whole of its business most effectively for the last twelve month':. Yet the thought arises tint even better service, and a more-helnful and wider outlook on civic matters would be obtained if a council representative of every section *ef the community were elected next April. There ie> no good reason why citizens whesf aeMvihVs in life a : ''e in no way connected with business administration should bo regarded as lieing euts'de the ranks-of nnwibly satisfactory councillors. A leaven of'business men in a borough council is a prime necessity; but there is room for others. All citizens who take a superintending interest in the c'vfc affairs of the town should bestir themselves forthwith: not leave their effort until the last few days before the election. Tt. is desirable that the very best men obtainable should he elected for the control of Levin's civic affairs for the two years next ensuing.
