The Chronicle LEVIN. TUESDAY, JANUARY 30, 1917, THE A. AND P. SHOW.
10-iuorrcttv the Horowhenua Agricultural and Pastoral Association wiU hold its eleventh annual show, at the Weraroa. Jiacecourse, Levi 11. So much good springs from a show, and tlie lessens to be learned are of so enduring a benefit to all intelligent farmers, that this annual fixture is deserving of tho whole-hearted support of every erson in the community. Levin town is dependent upon tho financial success of its surrounding settlers to a degree much in excess of the ordinary; it is iiD figure of speech to say that if the pastoral industry were to fail in these parts the town of 'Levin would become almost non-existent. And, to put the obverse side, we may say that the greater the prosperity of tho farming and pastoral people the greater will be the resources of the town. Outstanding success in fanning and pastoral pursuits depends and arises as much from study as from hard work, in these days; there is 110 better means of study for tlie pastoralist, 110 more practical methods, than that which an agricul'tuTal and pastoral show affords. By a close and retentive survey of the typos of animals shown tho dairyman and the sheepfarmer and the cattlefarmer may • rive at a full knowledge of what, constitutes the best tvpo of animal, and by applying to his own ease the information lie Virus acquired lie may build up for himself a better herd and thereby earn enhanced financial returrs. The show to Ije held to-morrow will be found to be one of the best the Horowhenua. A. and P. Association over has held, and it should attract a. record attendance.

Te Aroha Borough Council (with but one dissentient) has approved the Petoiio Borough Council's resolution in favour of conscripting wealth and of increasing soldier's pay. About onethird of the local bodies that have voted cn this proposal have been favourable to it; the remainder uitlier have opposed it or been, non-committal. A fat bullock has been donated by Mr X. Kirkealdie in aid of iNur.su Lewis's Maori Ambulance Fund. The Horowhemia A. and P. Association lias consented to forego its animal bullock weiglit-guessing competition for this year, and in place thereof lo allow Mr Kirkcaldie's bullock's weight to be guessed and the whole of the proceeds to go to Nurse Lewis's fund. The Association will hold the sheep weightguessing competitions as usual. The committee of the Ho't'owhenua A. and P. Society has decided that as the show to be held ill Levin to-morrow is solely for patriotic purposes, no collection boxes will he allowed on the ground. There are one or two "side-shows" already airangel for at the A. 'and P. Show to bo held in Levin to-morrow, and 'applications. for space larc fctill' being received by the association secretary. Association. A garden party is being held to-day on the Levin tennis court, when gifts of sweets for the stall 011 the show ground will be received. The stall will be on a large scale, and a comprehensive lot of sweets will be available for patrons' choice. The Levin Red Cross Society's Cookery Book will be offered for sale during the day at the sweet stall. A London cablegram dated 26th January gives details of British successes eastward of Loos and north of the Somme. At the latter place five Gorman machines were destroyed and I five driven down damaged. One British machine is reported missing.
Highly satisfactory rehearsals for the minstrel performance to be given next Friday night in the Century Hall, Levin, are being held nightly this week. Now performers are .being inij'oduced, also fresh items by the original performers, so that although the original bright and happy .setting will be retained still many of the items will be nmv. As there will be quite a batch of local men leaving for camp witli tlie reinforcements on Monday nest, this will be the last opportunity of affording them a public send-off, and the promoters of the farewell trust Uiat> the public: will assemble in even greater force than before. The President of the Horowhenua A. and P. Society (.Mr. Tompsitt) with Messrs. O. 131enkhorn and Hammond Murray, waited upon the Horowhenua Park Company recently to make representations as to the patriotic nature vf the show to be held to-morrow. In response to the request made, the Park Company resolved to make a donation, of £25 to the association's patriotic effort. This sum is one half of the ground rent-, and it certainly represents a liberal contribution. The Shannon polcemaii's horse is missinjg: and may be around Levin- ' Constable Bagrie will be glad to receive news of it. | Grass fires are causing trouble in | Levin.
