Farewell Social at Arrowtown

A most enjoyable social was held in Mr Thompson’s Tea Rooms on Monday, May 3, in honour of Mr Peter Ayson, who is leaving the district to take up his new position as relieving postmaster for Southland. The social was from the three sports clubs that Peter was a member of, namely, the football, tennis, and table tennis. The evening was filled in with dancing, competitions, and games. Mr A. Bailey was M.C. for the dance, and was in charge of all the games. During the evening duets were sung by Mrs I. Cowie and Miss D. Laing. Mrs Murphy played the piano for the dance.

At an interlude Mr Ayson was presented with a solid leather suitcase from the three sports bodies. Mr Hore spoke on behalf of the Football Club, also on behalf of the post office staff, of which Peter was a member, and said how very sorry they all were at his going away, as he was efficient and most obliging at all times. Mr W. Martin spoke on behalf of the Table Tennis Club, and Mr J. Henderson for the tennis members. Both men endorsed Mr Hore’s remarks and said the sportsmanship and spirit in which Peter played all games made him so popular, and everyone was sorry he was leaving the district. Peter, in thanking his friends for the lovely gift, stated how very sorry he was to be leaving. Supper was supplied, and was in the capable hands of Miss G. Thompson. The singing of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow ” terminated a very pleasant evening.
