secretary). Miss Jean E. McCurraek, assistant organiser art Craft, advised that art and craft materials as per application would be forwarded.

The secretary, Education Board, Invercargill, advised th.at Mr Breen’s tender for the erection of the teacher’s new residence had been forwarded to the department with a recommendation that its acceptance be authorised immediately. Also that the architect had been authorised to arrange for repairs to the infant room floor.

Regarding the (application for a second assistant it was pointed out" that owing to the acute shortage of teachers the department would not agree to the appointment of an additional assistant. It was appreciated that the position at the school was difficult and arrangements were made with the inspector to discuss the matter with the head teacher.

11l an interview with the inspector, Mr T. Whitwell, the chairman stated that the only way to relieve the position would be to obtain the services of a teacher residing in the district. One had been approached, and this person agreed to accept the position on a relieving basis subject to the department’s approval. The committee strongly recommended that this appointment be made. The secretary, School Committee, Kingston, wrote in reply to a petition for a mobile dental clinic, enclosing a copy of a letter received from the Minister of Health. Miss Howard reported that she had arranged for a senior officer of the Dental Division to visit the district. The committee agreed to support the project and meet the dental officer.

Mr C. B. Walker, head teacher, thanked Mr Given for the interest he had taken in School Club for the Southland Boys’ and Girls’ Agricul-

tural Clubs’ Association, and for judging of the plots and stock. Accounts amounting to £9 14s lid were presented and passed for payment. ROTARY A description of radium and of its discovery and vital importance was the subject chosen by Dr Anderson at the weekly meeting of the Queenstown Rotary Club on Tuesday. The speaker gave some outstanding facts and figures regarding the healing and at the same time dangerous properties of this valuable medical commodity in the saving of life, particularly in respect of the fell disease, cancer. The life of radium, said the doctor, was 2600 years. The overseas toast, “The Johannesburg

Club,” was given by Mr E. R. Hopwood. The members were asked to hand in marked stamps of the Otago centennial issue to the secretary.

Further Progress in Frankton Township Scheme

A further step was taken by the Lake County Council at its meeting last Thursday, to facilitate the orderly devolpment of Frankton Township. The council passed a resolution to make application for the Crown Lands in the township area, which comprise approximately 90 per cent, of the land, to be vested in the council.

The advantage would be that building site aggregation would be reduced to a minimum and that a plan for close settlement could be instituted which would allow early and economical provision of amenities. The council is to be congratulated upon their plan of action.
