Queenstown Defeats Arrowtown
The team that loses the ball cannot be expected to win the match and yet Queenstown lost the ball 22 times from 29 scrums and still won their match against Arrowtown 6 —3. Queenstown’s defence in the first half was good. The tackling was solid, but if Arrow had made full opportunity of their possession they should have won the game in the first half.
The handling of the Queenstown backs was faulty and the wingers saw little of the ball, but when they did, McLean and Hensman proved that they could really move.
It was unfortunate for Arrowtownthat J. O’Connell was Queenstown’s full-back. He always plays a good game but this was one of his best. -J. Spence, the Queenstown half, will long remember Arrow’s side men, McLean and Cotton, coming round on him.
The tackling was poor, but now and again there was a good orthodox tackle.
A. McLean made a 30-yard corner run to earn three points for Queenstown. Hensman, too, was elusive, but both these wingers were handicapped through lack of opportunity. Anderson was the most prominent player in the winner’s back line. K. Saunders hooked and worked well for the losers in the loose. McLean, on the side of their scrum, played his position well, and will be a man the selectors will watch. Munro and McLaren did their share of the work in the Queenstown pack and McLaren kicked a penalty from a handy position. The referee was Mr T. L. Hanrahau.
