SOUTH CANTERBURY MEETING
GRILL A FORM HORSE The South Canterbury Jockey Club’s two-day meeting will open on Saturday and as the fields have filled well, an enjoyable day’s sport should be assured. The following horses may be well supported in their selected races: Tekapo Hurdles. —Wee Mac, John Gay, Wild Cry. Claremont Hack Handicap—Great Victory, Lilli Marlene, Ned Kelly. Opihi Trot.—Gay Scott, Whipster, Gloxiana.
Elloughton Handicap. —Grill, Graeme, Falconbridge.
Pareora Hack Steeplechase. Lunaria, Debater, Lisheen.
Seadown Hack Handicap.—Theocritus, Connaught, Kirkella, Beaconsfield Trot. —Sirocco, Hineora, Farnborough.
Kingsdown Hack Handicap. Bay Fort, Sorry, Loch Lennox. Brilliant Win Duncraig could not handle the clay track, at Forbury Park during the centennial meeting, but on the grass track at Oamaru on Saturday he scored a brilliant win in the R. A. McDowell Handicap, leading all the way and winning with something in hand. He is to race in Christchurch during the next few months and should more than hold his own with the stronger opposition which he is likely to meet. Light Brigade Two-year-old
Vigilant, who won the Welcome Handicap at the Addington Easter carnival confirmed his good showing there by winning the Oamaru Juvenile Stakes of 1948 in good style. His victory was made easier by Chamfer, the favourite, breaking at the start and losing more than 20 lengths, but, nevertheless, he did all that*was asked of him and he looks like being one of the best three-year-olds next season. He lacks nothing in breeding, being by Light Brigade out of that good, honest pacing mare of a few years ago Coquette. On Approval
Returning his backers one of the smallest win dividends of the day, On Approval atoned for his two recent defeats at Forbury by winning the Enfield Handicap in very easy fashion. He looks on the way to good class. Beat Strong Mile Field
The consistent Sand Piper beat a strong field of sprinters over a mile at Oamaru on Saturday, proving that he can both sprint and stay. He may do his winter racing in Christchurch. Large Winning Margin What must rank as one of the largest winning margins recorded in recent years was put up by San Quentin at Ashburton on Saturday when he won the Alford Hack Steeplechase by no less than a mile. There were only five starters and four of them failed to negotiate the first round of the course, leaving San Quentin the only candidate standing up, and he went on to complete the course at a hunting pace. Cavalryman was the ,only other runner to finish coming in four minutes after the winner. First Win
Our Style, who had been placed four times previously won her first race in the Lagmhor Stakes at Ashburton on Saturday, and the way she won suggests chat it will not be long before she leads another field home. Half-brother to Emulous Sirocco scored his first success at Oamaru on Saturday and won well. This half-brother to Emulous may go on and live up to his relationship with the champion, Bingen Dale
That good Southland trotter Bingen Dale was made favourite for his race at Auckland on Saturday, but failed to show up. He is engaged there again next Saturday and may shape better. Large Dividend Payer Rumba, who won the Waihi Handicap at the Egmont meeting on Saturday, returned his few backers nearly £2OO, He is a two-year-old colt by Probation out Of Waidanoe, and has had only six starts.
