The Regional Timber Controller advised that permission had been granted for the council to sell approximately 25,000 feet of pinus insignis timber situated on Queenstown Hill. It was decided to call tenders for the timber. Cr Lindsay suggested that the council adopt a plan that was operating in other centres of replanting two trees where one was cut. Three requisitions for repairs were issued. The traffic inspector, Mr R. O. Wilkinson, reported that regular patrols had been carried out in the borough and that attention had been given to parking, cycle traffic, and the observance of road markings on the borough streets. Cr Lindsay asked that when the estimates were drawn up the equivalent of one year’s carnival funds be used in the repairs of the Garrison Hall. It was decided to seek advice from the Public Works Department regarding the improving of the town’s water

supply. The new librarian started on April 8, and since then the library hours observed have been the same as previously. During the month 127 books had been purchased at a cost of £46 4s Bd. The application of Mr H. Tomkies for the erection of a shed near the waterfront so that fuel could lie stored for his launch had been granted at the previous month’s meeting and Mr Tomkies was asked to submit plans. When the plans came before the council last Thursday night there were also two objections to the application. One was from a nearby ratepayer who objected on the grounds of the danger of fire. The other was from the building inspector who said that the building proposed was not in conformity with the “ brick area ” regulations. Cr Gavin: The application was granted only because the building was to be of a temporary structure. It is proposed that some day the whole of that block will be removed. A conconcrete or brick structure would be

permanent. The Mayor: We can rescind the “ brick area ” by-law by a resolution if we wish.

Or Lindsay suggested a structure that would not be permanent and yet be fire proof. The Works Committee is to investigate the matter.
