Central Otago Defence Rifle Clubs

GOLDFIELDS CHALLENGE SHIELD This shield has not been shot for since 1941 and was won recently by Cromwell-Bannockburn A team with Gimmerburn A a close second.

Nine teams from Central Otago districts competed. This is a record number of entries and was one of the largest gatherings of riflemen seen in Central for many years. The highest total was gained by A. Bell, of Cromwell, with 99 out of 105, and the only possible at any range was put on by N. Scott, of Gimmerburn B. These two scores are very creditable considering that the bulls on all targets have just been reduced by approximately one-third.

The weather was calm and hazy, but conditions deteriorated towards evening, when poor light and a few light drops of rain made shooting difficult.

Gimmerburn A were in the hunt from the beginning with Gimmerburn B, Alexandra and Arrowtown A always dangerous. Cromwell-Bannock-burn A, with steady shooting, managed to win with a margin of six points. At the conclusion of the shoot the shield was presented by Mr McArthur, of Alexandra, who concluded his speech by mentioning the faultless marking by a team headed by Mr W. Duthie.

After thanking the visiting teams for their attendance, Mr McArthur thanked the local club for the arrangements made for the shoot and also congratulated them on the excellent condition of their range. The team scores were as follows: — Cromwell-Bannockburn A . . . . 639 Gimmerburn A . . .... . . 633 Alexandra .. .. 614 Arrowtown A 604 Gimmerburn B .. . . . . .. 600 Albertown 571 Wedderburn 566 Cromwell-Bannockburn B .. 539
