Coin 113 Years Old Found in Garden

An English one shilling piece dated 1835 was found by a Queenstown resident, Mr W. Holland, Beach street, when he was digging his garden last week. The coin was well preserved and the wording could be easily read. It’s size is the same as that of the New Zealand coin of similar denomination which is circulating to-day, but it is thinner.

The coin was minted during the reign of William IV who was King of England from 1830 to 1837. The most obvious conclusion is that it was lost by one of the early settlers in the district.

Mr Holland said that about 10 years ago he found a penny in the same locality and that it bore a date showing that it was minted over 150 years ago. This coin is now in the possession of another Queenstown resident.
