Message of Thanks Left in Mountain Hut
The damage done to shepherds’ huts by trampers in the Lakes district aaJio may use them for a night’s shelter has been a longstanding complaint of settlers. As a rule these trampers are trespassing Avhen they use such huts. Not that the tolerant lake-side settler intends to take stern action to prohibit their use, but they do expect that reasonable care be taken of them. There is no excuse for ripping boards off the side for lighting fires. That is outright destruction. Yet that is what frequently happens.
It is unusual for trampers who have appreciated the shelter and used it with respect to leave any message of thanks which is only common courtesy. However, two such trampers who left such a message of appreciation, written on an old piece of cardboard were Bill McDougall and Gordon Patterson, of Invercargill. Their message reads:
“ Easter, 1948. Bill McDougall and Gordon Pattetfson, Invercargill, Chev. car to Gorge Hill, walked through Von Saddle to Ponds; Fallow head hunting; no luck. Spent two good nights in this hut (Von —Mt. Nicholas run) on return trip. Thank you, but we didn’t like your pet rats.”
