Cromwell v. Clyde r ■ ’:■ A GRADE MATCH

The Cromwell A Grade team played Clyde at' Cromwell last Saturday in a practice match, the score being 6-all.

The Clyde forwards gained possession'of the ball more than Cromwell in the set scrums, but the “Blue,” forwards were' quick to seize any advantage in the loose..

Thf backs showed promise in both handling and tackling, and should display even better form as the season progresses. JUNIOR GRADE CROMWELL v. WANAKA The Cromwell junior fifteen put on quite a good display of football in their game against Wanaka last Saturday. The team seemed considerably fitter than the Saturday before, and both forwards and backs worked very well,- the forwards • taking the ball away at’.their toes on quite a number of occasions.

The.. Mside backs were perhaps inclined. in a little too much, but some passing rushes to the wings gave each;- of .the backs plenty of handling. .

The’final score was: Cromwell 13, Wanalca nil, Cromwell securing three tries and two conversions.

ARHOWTOWN FOOTBALL Ore Saturday afternoon a team from Wright’s. Bush, Southland, visited Arrowtown and played the local team. The game in the first spell was fairly open,, but in the second spell the local forwards were better, the visitors being unable to open up the play or cope with the Arrow forwards loose rushes. The only try scored by Arrow was from a cross kick by B. McKechnie, a visitor playing for Arrow scoring.

Play, in the first half was in favour -of the visiting team, while in the second the Arrow forwards played better and proved more than equal to the- opposition. D. Thompson kicked a goal for Arrow and the game finished with the score 15—6 in favour of Wright’s Bush. Members of the Arrowtown Football -Club gathered in the Council Chambers on Wednesday evening to bid farewell to F. (Mick) McEntyre who is leaving the district to reside with his parents in Invercargill. A social evening, interspersed with songs and items, was held. Speakers were Mr E. J. Saunders, president of the club, and Mr G. Douglas, the club captain, both of whom stressed the fact that the club was losing a very .keen member and player.

Mr Saunders, in presenting Mick with .a wallet, wished him every success for the future. Musical honours terminated a most enjoyable evening.

Country Football Club’s Annual Meeting

The annual meeting of the Country Football Club was held in the Lower Shotover Hall on Wednesday night of last week, Mr W. A. McLean presiding •over a good attendance of members. The report showed that last season the club’s senior team had won the Jopp Cup (Wakatipu competition) and

the Teachers’ Challenge Cup. The balance sheet showed a credit of £ls 14s Id, *■ a feature being the expenditure of £lO 10s on food parcels sent to the •Coventry Club in Britain. - -pit. A special vote of thanks was passed ' to Mr Charles Hansen, who not only 1 provided a football ground, but prepared the ground for the club’s use. It was unanimously resolved to enter a team in the Vincent Sub-union’s junior competition. As arranged, players from Arrowtown and Queenstown would ■ augment the club’s membership. The election of officers resulted: —Patron, Mr D. Jardine, snr.; president, Mr W. A. McLean; vice-presidents, Messrs V. Gerken and J. S. : Brown; secretary, Mr A. S. Robins; club coaches, Messrs. Bowling Season Closes in

Beautiful Autumn Setting

111 a beautiful sotting of autumn colouring a large number of visitors and local residents assembled on Saturday at the bowling green' in the: Tourist Department’s domain for l;he closing games' of a very successful bowling season. A thre-bowl progressive match consisting of 12 teams, three a-side, comprising local and visiting bowlers took part. A. Tripp and' L. Hanrahan were the only skips to win three games each, and on the aggregate points the former was declared the winner. During the afternoon tea adjournment, Mr Nelson, president of the club, thanked the committee, and especially the scretary, Mr W. Mclnnes, for their cooperation during the season. He also thanked the greenkeepers. .

In the evening, Wakatipu bowlers and some visitors met in the Ambassadors for the purpose of making the presentation of trophies Avon during the season. A very enjoyable hour or so was spent in toasting, 1 song and story. Mr W. H. Nelson was in the chair. The toast list prepared by the toastmaster, Mr W. Smith, was as follows:—“ The King,” proposed by the chairman; “Wakatipu Bowling Club,” W. D. Warren, reply"-by the president; “The Ladies,” Mr R. J. Fuller, reply by J. McDonald; “ Kindred Clubs,” Dr W. A. Anderson, reply by Mr King, Tuatapere Club. The president, Mr W. H. Nelson, then made the presentation of trophies with accompanying congratulatory remarks. They were as follows: —Championship Singles, B. Yercoe; Champion Doubles, A. A. Tripp and P. Gardiner; Handicap Singles, W. H. Nelson; Handicap Doubles, D. W. Thompson and J. McDonald; Leads and Seconds, J. McDonald. Mr Mclnnes, secretary of the club, announced that the Wyndham Club was the winner of the art union for a set of bowls. The amount raised was in the vicinity of £l6O. He acknowledged the assistance received from Mr L. Hanrahan in this relation.
