WOOL MARKETING Australian wool growers are pressing on with plans for the organised marketing of wool by growers themselves, when the operations of the Joint Organisation are completed. Federated Farmers has just received detailed advice of decisions made at the recent half-yearly conference of the Australian Wool and Meat Producers’ Federation.
Since the introduction of a growers’ marketing plan at last year’s annual conference of that federation, various State growers’ organisations have given it further consideration and now the plan has been given final and unanimous approval. Negotiations with the Commonwealth Government will immediately take place to prepare for official acceptance of it.
At the recent conference, growers recommended that, commencing with the 1948-49 season, the contributorycharge on wool should be levied at up to 3 per cent., plus the amount required for current expenditure but not to exceed 5 per cent. Legislation will be sought for the period commencing
with the 1949-50 season. The unexpended part of that money for 1948-49, together with the levies under the legislation, are proposed to be paid into a capital account to be used as a fund to support a “ Growers’ Post J.O. Plan,” when the present one ceases operation. If that plan fails to materialise the money held will be re-
turned to growers. The Australian Wool and Meat Producers’ Federation is keeping closely in touch with growers'in South Africa and New Zealand for the interchange of ideas and opinions. Australia will
co-operate with growers in these countries on any similar marketing plans. I.F.A.P. CONFERENCE Mr W. N. Ferry, Dominion president of Federated Farmers, sailed for Bri-
tain on the Akaroa two weeks ago en route to the second annual conference of the International Federation of Agricultural Producers, to be held in Paris from May 19 to May 29. The permanent organisation of the federation will be planned at this conference and it will deal with specific problems more fully than has been possible at earlier meetings. A broadcast address will be given on the I.F.A.P, by Mr W. W. Mulholland on May 20. He will deal with the place of New Zealand in international farmers’ organisations.
