Separate Wage For Housewives
I An Adelaide social wprker, Mrs Phyllis Duguid, wife of the noted surgeon, Dr Charles Duguid, believes housewives should get a separate weekly wage. Her scheme includes:—
Basie wage to be adjusted so that a bachelor would receive a wage for himself only.
Husbands to get a similar wage, with the balance paid direct to his wife by the Government.
Where the husband was not employed by the Government, private employers to pay as tax the difference between the husband’s old and new wage and the Government to pass it on to the wife.
The homemaker’s wage to be paid to all women who are prevented by essential home duties from earning their own income.
Mrs Duguid says the scheme would not cost the Australian Government any more than the present method.
