Government Officials Investigating Steamer Fares
Complete investigations are being made by Government officials who visited Queenstown last week to determine what concessions, if any, can be made in the fares of lakeside residents when travelling on the Government steamer.
Mr J.S, H. Orr, special officer, Invercargill, and Mr F. G. Culling, commercial agent, Invercargill, are undertaking the investigations and have said that their report will he submitted to Wellington, With such conditions which now exist and which were fully ventilated in a recent issue of the Lake County Mail, it is a foregone conclusion that their report can only be a favourable one. Rather than give the lakeside resident concessions in fares over the same
period as the tourist concessions, it is hoped that their report will recommend a yearly reduced fare. Perhaps the tourist could afford a few shillings extra to balance the budget? It is mostly during the winter months that settlers can find time to leave their districts and therefore if a summer concession were made, few would be able to avail themselves of it. However, the fact is, they’re on the job. We can only be patient and hope that this time the Government will realise the gross injustice they are now imposing on lakeside residents.
