The alarming thought of finding yourself with a hotel full of guests and practically no staff, only an hour before breakfast, is something which might constitute a nightmare for a hotel proprietor. When it actually happens, then it could be a good excuse for taking an overdose of sleeping pills. But these things do happen, and only last week it happened at one hotel at Queenstown. The staff walked out. There is an art about this “ walk out” business. First of all it’s got to be done at the right time. Yes, time is a big factor. You would’nt ask the boss for a rise when you know he is thinking of putting off staff. . . now would you? The best time to ask him is when you think that he “just can’t carry on without you.” If you get the rise it will be for one of two reasons; that you caught him on the bounce and he can’t replace you just at the moment, or that he “just can’t do without you.” Time alone can give the answer to that one. However, back to this walk out business. The whole thing’s like the measels. ~ . very catchy. It started with the “ wharfies ” Then the “ trammies ” tried it out, Now it’s come to Queenstown For the pubs to have a bout! There is one or two ways to solve the problem. Crawl down and start pleading for the nice staff to come back to your nice hotel where everything will be nice. Of course it’s very difficult when you don’t know what the reason is for the walk-out. But then there’s another way (which if you’re contemplating a walk-out you’ve got to consider) and that is to tell the guests the whole story, and ask them to help you out by merely being
