RETURNS OF LAND DUE APRIL 9 PENALTY FOR NEGLECT Furnishing a return of land is an ■annual duty imposed by law on all landowners who at noon on March 31 hold land of an unimproved value according to the Government valuation in excess of £SOO. The unimproved value is the value of the land exclusive of buildings, fencing and other improvements. Forms are obtainable at .all post offices and at offices of the Land and Income Tax Department. The return should be completed and forwarded (as directed in the notice rappearing in this issue) on or before April 9. Any person neglecting to furnish a ■■return is liable to a penalty not exceeding £IOO. Neglect to furnish returns at the prescribed time not only renders taxpayers liable to prosecution but also in many cases for considerably moie tax than would otherwise be payable. 'The Act provides for an exemption in respect of registered mortgages or balances of purchase money in certain -circumstances, but to obtain the ex■emption it is essential that a return showing particulars of mortgages owing should be furnished. The Land and Income Tax Department cannot assume that mortgages are owing, and in the absence of a return the assessment is made as though the land were unem/cumbered. The tax assessed in these cases may be in excess of the amount which would be payable if the return had been furnished. All persons liable to furnish returns are therefore advised in their own interests to forward their returns on or before the above date.

Referees’ Sub-association Tlie annual meeting of the Referees’ Sub-association was held last Monday night, March 22, at Cromwell. The meeting was very poorly attended; the only clubs being represented were Tarras, Clyde and Cromwell. Mr Foote was nominated to the position of referees’ representatives on the Flag Committee. The secretary was instructed to contact the Sub-union, asking them if they would agree with the Referees’ Association’s request that if any team was dissatisfied with a referee appointed to control its game, the, complaint must be handled- by the Subunion and the Referees’ Association, the team accepting the referee appointed until the complaint could be discussed and an agreement decided upon. The next meeting of the Referees’ Association will be held on the same night as that of the Vincent Subunion’s next meeting.
