Queenstown Borough Council Monthly Meeting
There was a full attendance of councillors at the monthly*"meeting of the Queenstown 'Borough Council held last Thursday night. ' The Mayor, Dr Andersoif presided. Before commencing the business, the council passed a motion of sympathy the relatives t .f the Tate John Wilkinson whose death occurred last week. The’ Main Highways Board advised that the council’s application for Man street and a portion of Camp ’ street to be declared a main highway; ha; been refused. . Stray dogs in the town were becoming a nuisance and it was decided to appoint two inspectors who were to take action in impounding such dogs. Rabbiting authority on the Peninsula and the Western terrace has been granted by Mr W. Cable. Rates collected amounted to £261(5 and outstanding rates are £9. This represents 99.6 per cent, collected. The carnival was very successful and councillors congratulated the town, clerk, Mr Robertson, for thc'work lie had put into it. A credit balance of £420 was shown. Accounts authorised for payment amounted to £420 14s 6d. Library fees and fines for February were £o Is 4id. The position of librarian lias not yet been filled. Since irrigation was prohibited oe February 13, higher levels in the town have not be<fn without water, stated the Works Report. An inspection was made from house to bemuse for leakv taps. Cr Thompson said that the position could not be relaxed as before the restrictions) were enforced the use of water had been abused. Application is to be made to the Education Board for the purchase of buildings at .Lower Shotover School. It is intended to erect the .buildings at the new sports ground. The second springboard to be erected at the bathing sheds has been broken. The works committee is to investigate. The Works ('onmiirtee is to look into the cost and possibility of procuring water pipes which are to Ife used to run from the main to the new sports ground so that the Fire Brigade may practice there. Depositing of rubbish in the borough yards brought forward a complaint from a nearby resident that it was a ‘breeding ground for flies. After some discussion the council left the matter in the hands of the Works Committee with power to act. A recent statement .made by the Wellington District Medical Officer, Dr H. Smith, emphasised the menace of flies in spreading infantile paralysis. Dr Smith said that urgent steps should be taken by local bodies to prevent flies from breeding and said that all rubbish and compost heaps should be covered with soil. Mr H. Tomkies’s application to erect a shod on the waterfront was left for the Works Committee to report back to the council at the next meeting. Authority was given the Rev. .E, T. Olds, president of the Methodist Church, Auckland, to conduct an openair service somewhere along the waterfront on March 17. The Queenstown Progressive League requested that the council sec fit that certain improvements be made to Carrisou Hall. The matter is to be held over at the moment as the council is endeavouring to purchase the hall.
