WANAKA NEWS

Wanaka Lake Level Definitely to be Raised

“ Wanaka Lake level will be risen, perhaps not for some years, but for any scheme of planning the Lake County Council contemplated this fact would have to be considered,” stated Mr F. T. M. Kissel, general manager, State Hydro-Electrical Department, in a recent telephone conversation with Mr D. H. Cockbum, chairman of Lake County Council.

That is the official' statement the ratepayers and residents of Wanaka and the Lake County Council have been waiting for for some time. Moreover, it has also been remarked upon by the Main Highways Board and the Loan Board in letters received by the council at its meeting last week. The Main Highways Board advised that although proposals for reconstruction and sealing of Ardmore street are technically satisfactoy, it recommended that work be deferred in view of the proposal to raise the lake level and until labour conditions are easier. The board recommended that a dust laying seal to the present alignment and grading should be adopted as a temporary measure. The Loans Board advised the council to make fresh application for a loan to provide a new water supply and extension amenities at Glendhu camping grounds. A scheme for the development of this area on a large scale must now be abandoned as it is understood that when the lake level is risen the greater part of this camping area will be under water. Here again, the present wharves will undoubtedly be under water also, so any extensions or major repair work on them would hardly be practicable.
