Astronomical Offer to Russia
Central Otago is remarkable for bright sunshine, clearness of atmosphere, and steadiness of sky. It has attracted astronomers’ attention from far afield as an ideal location for an observatory. Some 30 years ago Yale University, U.S.A., was negotiating with the New Zealand Government for a site for a large telescope, and Central Otago was mentioned as the best place for it. The negotiations fell through, however, and Yale selected South Africa for the telescope. Now it has become known that Soviet Russia wishes to set up an observatory in the southern hemisphere, and the Wellington Astronomical Society has suggested that New Zealand send an invitation to Russia to consider New Zealand’s best area; in fact one of the best in the world for the purpose.
