Low Water Pressure Rectified At the monthly meeting of the Cromwell Borough Council held on January 15, Cr Brown, deputising for the chairman of the,/ Water Committee, Mr Lawrie, stated that there was little trouble with the water supply to the town this month. The gratings at the head of the FireAvood Creek waterrace have ben cleared, and the pipe across the Cromwell Flat has been patched where it Avas leaking badly. This leak is the main reason for the low water pressure experienced in the town during the past Aveek, for the pipe line across the flat is getting old and will have to be jacketed in concrete 'before it will be safely watertight, SWIMMING The council decided to set a week "for the swimming club for the purpose of teaching to swim those pupils at school who do not get enough time for instruction during the school day, and also for continuing the training of “those people who have left school and wish to continue their swimming under -tuition. This tuition hour will be commenced as soon as the restrictions are lifted. CONGESTION AT BUS The Mayor, Mr Partridge, remarked on the congestion experienced about the bus depot during the Christmas and New Year period. He stated that at one time there were 10 buses there at one time and he said that until the site shifted to a less congested area further from the town, there would always be the danger of accidents. SPECIAL TRAIN TO DUNEDIN A request has been made by the Oomwell Borough Council, which also asks for the support of the Councils of Alexandra and Vincent, to the New Zealand Railways for a special train •from Cromwell to Dunedin on February •28 to enable people from Otago Central -fco travel down on Friday night to :3ee the fireworks display and travel
back on Sunday morning. FOOTPATHS Cr Hoad was congratulated by the Mayor, Mr William Partridge, on the work carried out on the footpaths in the main street. The workmen, who are all volunteers, have agreed to carry on and finish the footpaths sometime this month, the area remaining to be done being that from Jelly’s to the Hotel Cromwell, and from the bridge to Mr A. Rees’s. LIBRARY During the Christmas and New Year period, library books have been lent to casual visitors and campers, who have not bothered to return them personally to the librarian, stated Mr G. Stewart, town clerk. He also said that he had picked up many council library books in the lounge of a Cromwell hotel, and it was very difficult to trace those responsible. + + + + Grading work has been carried out at Gay street, Inniscourt street, Achil street and Murray street. The grader is at present in good Avorking order and it should not be very long before most of the streets receive attention, + + •+■ + Mr P. A, Heaney has resumed his position as caretaker of the Mt. Pisa water-race as from December 23, 1947. + + -f + Chving to the restrictions, a number of hut cancellations at the camping ground have been received but the grounds have been Avell patronised by campers during- the holiday season. Camping ground fees collected for the month ended December 31, 1947, were £42 10s 9d and the comparison between this and the last nine-monthly period was: —1946, £176 6s 6d; 1947, £179 14s.
