From the Files of the Wakatlp Mail April, 1867: “How long are we, citizens,” says a correspondent, “ during the process of forming our streets, to be humbugged and annoyed? At one time and place the pedestrian has to scramble over a heap of tins in his track. At another he is endangered severely of shaking his nervous system or breaking his legs—that is if he falls properly by being precipitated into an entrenchment, I don’t know how deep.” The tender of Mr J. Turner was accepted for sinking wells in the town. The price was £1 2s per foot, and the wells were to be sunk four feet under the water level to be marked on the jetty at 8 o’clock on April 9. The following charges were made for the use of the Queenstown jetty: Coal, bricks, lime, wooden posts and rails, salt, sawn timber and stone, 3d per ton; firewood, Is per cord; wool, 6d per bale; horses, Is; cattle, 9d; sheep Id; and pigs, 2d per head. All dues go to the borough council. A cake of gold was brought from Southberg’s claim to Queenstown on Saturday. It weighed 2820zg, and was the product of 200 tons of stone. The tender of Messrs Telford and Mills has been accepted for the formation of the main trunk road between Arrow Flat and Hayes Lake: Price, £394.
