Arrowtown to be Included in Minister’s Visit

Advice that the Minister of Worke, the Hon. R. Semple, *ould include Arrowtown in his itinerary for his nest visit to the' Lakes district was received by the Arrowtown Borough Council at its first meeting since the elections, held on Tuesday of last week. Mn .fJwpple stated,... however, that the council' was in error regarding the date of hie visit. Present at the meeting were: The Mayor, Mr E. Thompson, Crs J. W. Henderson, J. W. Reed, >. J. Saunders, By- C. Patterson,-R, J. Cowie, and W. X Shaw.An apology for absence wae received from Cr L. Stapp. Cr J. W. Reed and appointed Deputy Mayor. The appointment of committees resulted: Finance—The Mayor (chairman), Crs Saunders, Reed and Henderson. Works.—Cr# Cowie (chairman), Patterson, Stapp, and Reed. Hall.—Crs Henderson (chairman), Shaw and ■ Stapp. Cemetery and Domain—The council. - The dog tax., was feted as per last year, bona fide drotera and shepherds’ dogs 2a 6d, all others, 7e 6d. Doga which are housed within the borough are to be registered with the borough. The postmaster, Mr W. J. Hore, wrote suggesting that the council and the business people purchase health stamps for the next two month*. The town clerk was authorised to purchase health stamps' toKthe value of fl. Mr Brunton, Health Inspector, tabled a report of inspections of f food premises. Considerable alterations and improvements were required at the bakery, and the installation of a wash-up sink and hand basin were required at the butchery, he stated. Mr Landrcke. of the Highways Board, wrote stating that the extra money to complete the,,, gravelling. of the main highway within the borough was available. Messrs Crane and Cowie’s quote imposts was accepted subject to inspection by the Mayor and Cr Patterson. It was decided ,to ask the district Building Controller to return the plana of the conveniences to enable the council to call tenders for this work. STATE HIGHWAY Mr E. R. Hopwood. county clerk, wrote stating that his council would support an application for an additional .State -highway through* Arrowtown. Arising from a suggestion from the Progress .League it . was resolved that the council telegraph Mr McDonald, . M.P*, pointing out that the State highway by-passing Arrowtown would be a retrograde, step and soliciting his assistance in an endeavour to have this matter r adjusted. The annual report on firs brigades was received. - The town clerk submitted a list of sections which were borough property, and it was decided that the lease of the first available section be offered for t s»leThe; chairman of the Works Committee submitted his report, which was adopted knd |:his action in purchasing a yoke for the grader was endorsed. It was decided to purchase and instal bird .petting for the pavilion ceiling at the recreation ground. It yras resolyed to again write to the poweip board regarding the lighting of the Domain. .The. trustees of the Oddfellows’ Lodge, for*,their generous offer of the building to,,be pfJedyrere thanked, and it-was resolved that the council pay the expenses of transfer and so on. Accounts amounting to £39 10s 5d were passed for payment.
