HITCH-HIKE TO CROMWELL
600 Miles in Seven Days When two youths, Alec Meikle and Brian Matheson, arrived at Cromwell last week they had done over 600 miles of hitch-hiking in seven days. The boys started from their home town, Oarnarq, and have “ hitched ” their way as far south as Invercargill, around the lakes districts, and throughout Central Otago. They carried a tent and sleeping bags, but no cooking utensils. “ It’s not worth the risk,” Brian commented. “We have complete faith in the restaurants.” Many of their rides had been in trucks, they said, and one truck driver had found them most useful in loading seven and a-half tons of coal as payment for their trip. They have since asked drivers how far they were going—and then asked to be put off at the town before the end of the trip. They are now on their way back to Oamaru and with fine weather and kind-hearted motorists, expect to be back in time to rccbmmeaee work this weak.
