School Children Examined by Medical Officer at Cromwell

An examination was made of pupils of the primary and secondary schools at Cromwell last week by Dr Maxwell Jeans, Medical Officer, Department of Health. Dr Maxwell Jeans said v .that her work dealt with problems as effecting parents —largely from the preventative aspect. She could not at this stage disclose the results of the work at Cromwell. American and English films of a health protection nature were screened for both children and parents. The number of diptheria eases in the South Island were lower than those of the North Island, she stated; so low in fact that the Department feared that if an epidemic broke out it would probably be on a large scale, and for this reason, imunisation was even more important for South Island children. In a parent discusion Dr Maxwell Jeans stressed the value of milk in the daily diet of children. So important was milk, she said, that it vu possible for her to diagnose those she had examined into two classes —those who drank plenty of milk and those who did not—with a fair degree of accuracy.
