From the Files of the Wakatip * Mail February 6, 1867: The council accepted the tender of D. Lyall for formation of streets, making pathways, and constructing wood kerbing on both sides. The price per chain was £ll 17s. Lyall’s tenders for stone crossings and covered culverts was also accepted. * * * February, 1867: Some excitement was created in Queenstown on Saturday evening from the fact that two miners named Grant and Gallen had specially engaged a steamer to take them to the head of the lake that night. They came down the day previous, bringing with them a splendid sample of rough water-worn gold. ♦ * * March, 1867: His Excellency the Governor, Sir George Grey, visited Arrowtown and Queenstown on March 2, 1867. Before reaching Arrowtown the Governor was escorted into Cardrona by a party of miners on horseback, and at the Government tent an elegant cold collation had been provided by Mr and Mrs Gwyer. Arrowtown was gaily decorated with evergreens and flags. At the boundary of the Queenstown district the Governor was welcomed by the warden and 80 horsemen. He visited the. hospital and the flour mills at Frankton Ifalls. He was enthusiastically welcomed in Quenestown. Addresses of welcome were also presented by the miners and the Order of Foresters.
