LAKE COUNTY MAIL No. 26, Wednesday. November 19, 1947. GLENORCHY ROAD
The reply received from the Minister of Works to this newspaper’s request for information on the Glenorchy road question will not be received with any great enthusiasm by the residents of this district, giving as it does no indication as to when the work will be commenced other than that the matter will be reviewed when more urgent work is disposed of. One would assume that the matter oi some 300 people living in isolation would qualify the issue to be graded as urgent and' given a high place on the priority list for work to be commenced immediately. On the Minister's estimate it is going to cost in the vicinity of £6900 per mile to construct the Glenorchy road, but the benefits which would accrue if the road were put through would more than justify this or even greater expenditure on the project. The most important benefits resulting would be the termination of the isolation of Glenorchy with resultant relief to the conditions of uncertainty at present prevailing. It is good to have the assurance of the Minister that he appreciates Glenorchy’s difficulties and is prepared to have the matter reviewed when more urgent work is disposed of. It should be the duty of residents and local bodies concerned, as it will be of this newspaper, to continue to press for-action on this-matter.
