Smoking Restrictions Criticised “ I think the Government has given us a good example of the principle of ‘Do not as I do, but do as I say, because it is asking one section of the community —the smokers, to make a very substantial contribution in what is alleged to be a campaign to save (Voliars,” said Mr T. L. [Macdonald (Oppn., Wallace), criticising the new imports on tobacco introduce*? by the Government in the House of Representatives. The price of tobacco was being increased, said Mr Macdonald, but considering the amount of money circulating in the community, it was a vain hope that the increase in tobacco prices would result in any reduced consumption of tobacco, and consequently any lessened drain on dollar funds. What had the Government done to save dollars? asked Mr Macdonald. Ho proceeded to . criticise the Government. ■> for the purchase of American cars for its own use. When private people required new cars they had to take whatever models that might come in from Britain or Canada, but when the Government wanted cars it went to America and used American dollars. Further, the cars had been imported more or less fully assembled. About 60 cars were ordered; 20 had arrived, and 40 were due next year. “ When the Government attempts to make one section of the community suffer discomfort to save dollars it should set an example,” remarked Mr Macdonald. “Anything that can be done to improve the lot of war pensioners must meet with general commendation,” remarked Mr Macdonald when < two amending Bills which give effect to increased pensions as announced in the Budget were before the House of Representatives. The Bills were passed.
