Bowling Club Has Successful Opening Day

The Artowtown Bowling Club held its official opening last Saturday. The weather was fine, the day being the sunniest this season, and the green was in excellent condition, favourable comments being passed by visiting bowlers on the fastness and evenness of the surface. Bowlers from Queenstown and Cromwell were present, together with two New South Wales bowlers. Mr G. Ogilvie, president of the club, welcomed all visitors and members. He expressed the deepest sympathy of members to Mr McGinness, a member of the Wakatipu Club, on the death of his wife. Dr Austin, Central Otago delegate to the Dominion Bowling Council, thanked Mr Ogilvie for the invitation to be present, paying high tribute to the Arrowtown Club members for the large amount of work done by them in laying down the new green and surroundings. He considered it a wonderful achievement that the members of so small a club had brought the green to such perfection in two years. Mrs Ogilvie then rolled the first bowl, and the green was declared open. Before play began, the retiring president, Mr J, Dalrymple, presented the badge of office to Mr Ogilvie, president, and Mr W. B. Gibb, secretary. At the conclusion of play, Mr W. Nelson, president of the Wakatipu Club, thanked the Arrowtown Club members for the invitation to the opening, and thanked the women for the afternoon tea. The first challenge match for the season for the Jolly Cup was played, a Bannockburn rink being the challengers. Arrowtown sustained the challenge, the score on the twentieth head being 26 —10. Playing for Bannockburn were J. Stewart (skip), L. Henderson, A. Campbell and D. Rutherford; for Arrowtown —A. C. Erridge (skip), G. Ogilvie, E. J. Saunders and W. E. Gibb.
