LAKE COUNTY COUNCIL
WANAKA EXTRA-URBAN PLANNING SCHEME During the past term this scheme was revived under the guidance of the surveyor-general, Mr R. Dick. A technical committee under the chairmanship of the chief surveyor, Dunedin, has been working for some mouths. Following formal approval by the council the proposed scheme, with real vision towards the future of Wanaka, will, he ■was sure, receive the ultimate unanimous approval of the residents and ratepayers of this favoured spot m the year 1947-48. frankton township The approved scheme for replanning of Frankton will shortly be commenced in the form of a survey. The intention of the present council is that an orderly and economic development of the township shall be pushed ahead with all speed in order that the ever-increas-ing demand for residential and business sites may be met. AFFORESTATION Due to financial reasons the council has not been able to proceed with the planting of the 462-acre reserve at Wanaka. To carry this out Government assistance is necessary. Arrangements are under way for the milling of timber in the Cardrona nursery and other odd mature plantations. GROWTH ON ROADSIDES Tn accordance with a decision of the New Zealand Counties’ Conference, the council has been pressing property holders to eradicate noxious weeds and growth on roadsides affronting their properties. Those who had co-operated were thanked for the task of canjing out a worrying and distasteful undertaking. AERODROMES Tn addition to the Frankton aerodrome, which is under the control of a local board, the council has under consideration the matter of providing a field at Glenorehy where such an amenity is so very essential. There are other points in the county where facilities for aircraft will some day be required. OTHER MATTERS Other matters covered by the chairman were the ‘Local Government Commission, Rivers Control and Soil Conservation, housing for staff, Otago Centennial and compilation of the history of Lake County, In conclusion, the chairman thanked the members of the council for their helpfulness and co-operation during his full term of dffice. The clerk (Mr Hopwood), as in previous years, has been a great help to members of the council, the public, and particularly to himself. The engineer, Mr Yazey, had also been most co-operative and obliging to him. The Misses Inder, assistant clerks, were thanked, as also their mechanic and outside staff generally. The press also, was referred to by the chairman. The council and ratepayers alike regretted the end of what ( undoubtedly had become part of the life of tiie community, the Lake Wakatip Mail. It was pleasing, however, to know that the new paper, the Lake County Mail, will preserve a link between the council and ratepayers. The proprietor of the now paper was thanked for being so enterprising in re-establishing a newspaper and for the apace and full reports given to county affairs. The chairman added his further thanks to the council and staff stating that the council had come through an ■interesting term of office, but there was still much to be done. Crs Bryant, McLean and Thompson congratulated’ the chairman on his report and the able manner in which he had v condnc + e*d the meetings. Mr Kopwood, clerk, thanked the chairman and members for their consideration of his efforts. It was a pleasure, he said, to work with the council. Mr Warren also thanked the chairman and membora of the council, the clerk and engineer, for their unfailing courtesy in respect of the press work entailed.
