VALEDICTORY

Rev. ; Father Lynch Tlio parishioners of St. Joseph's Parish met in the Convent schoolroom on Sunday last week to hid farewell to the Rev. Father Kevin Lynch, who is leaving shortly to take up work in the mission fields of •Japan. After a very enjoyable nufsical programme had been presented by the children of St. Joseph’s Convent and assisting artists, Mr T. J. Donaldson, who was chairman for the evening, called on the Rev. Father Hanrahan to address the gathering. Father Hanrahan paid high tribute to the life work of Father Kevin and to his mother, who was making the great sacrifice of giving her son to such a noble work. Hr Alex. Mcßride, Lower Shotover, spoke on behalf of the country parishioners. and Master Robert Hanrahan on behalf of the school children, asked Father Lynch to accept a travelling companion. On behalf of the Queenstown parishioners, Mr Frank-Gavin presented the guest of the evening with a cheque, and in doing so, referred to the important part that the Lynch family had taken in church affairs over a long period of years. He congratulated him on his overseas appointment and wished him all good luck in the years to come. In reply, Father Lynch thanked all the speakers for the kind remarks that had been made in reference to his mother, family, and self. He stated that his life’s ambition was to go to the China mission fields, but now he was to go to Japan instead. He thanked the parishioners for the monetary gift, and stated that it would be used in some way to assist the missions. His thoughts and prayers would always go out to the good people of Queenstown. The following are the items given during the evening:— Part song, pupils of St. Joseph’s Convent; recitation, Miss M. Gavin; trio, Mr J. McDonald, James and Ann; duet, Mrs T. Donaldson and Mr J. McDonald; violin solo, Miss H. Bennetts; piano duet with violin, Misses Bennetts and D. Hanrahan; piano solo. Master Robert Hanrahan; solo, Mrs T. Donaldson; solo, Miss F. Cosgrove. The accompanists for the evening were Mrs J- McDonald and Mrs T. Donaldson.
