RADIO LINK WITH GLENORCHY
URGENT NEED FOR COMMUNICATION IN EMERGENCY
A request from the Government to provide emergency coniiuuiiieatiou for people in the Lake Wakatipu area was made by Mr T. L. Macdonald (National, A Wallace), when the Estimates were being considered in the House of -Representatives. He said that there was a single telephone line along a bridle track of 29 miles connecting Glenorchy at the head of Lake Wakatipu with Queenstown. There were about 200 people at the head of the lake who were isolated during snowfalls when the line broke down. Repairs often took two or three days. “ Could the Government install a small radio transmitting set, somewhat similar but not so large as that in use at Milford, so that the Glenorchy people could get into communication with Awarua and other radio stations in the event of an emergency at such times?”
asked .Mr Maedonald. ' There was not a launch stationed at the head of the lake big enough for use in rough weather, and,the installation transmitting set would provide alternative means of communication for the people of Glenorchy.
