LAKE COUNTY COUNCIL

The Upper Wakatipu Progressive League, Glenorchy, registered protests at the delay in the erection of a permanent bridge over the Bucklerburn and asked why the Earnslaw field had not yet been registered. The league also wanted to know whether any bounty is payable on birds’ eggs, and if not, to urge such payment. —To advise that action already taken in connection with the bridge and airfield and to state that the district branches of the Federated Farmers were asked to consider the matter of bounty on birds’ eggs. J. R. Ewing asked when the council intends to make a start on the removal of trees on Ewing’s road. —To advise that trees cannot be cut at present. J. R. Cowie, Arrowtown, applied for permission to take a-half inch pipe under MacDonald’s road at the foot of Magazine Hill. —Permission granted. J. .A Reid, Glenorchy, applied for permission to erect a swing gate on the unformed road between Sections 114-31) and 28-29 in Upper Wakatipu S.D. — Council approved. The Inspector of Health reported that conditions throughout the county were satisfactory. Wanaka, Glendu Bay, Cardrona and Frankton were visited. The Sanitary Inspector, Otautau also sent in a report. —Reports received. The report on traffic control for the period ended September 30 showed that traffic generally was well behaved. No warnings were necessary. L. Smith, Glenorchy, applied to install six electric lights in the main street at Glenorchy and to cross the street with lines to give lighting to the Public Hall, Post Office, and store. Application to be made to \the Minister of Public Works. A licence was granted to two returned soldiers to establish a motor camp .near to the Frankton road provided they conformed to certain regulations. The chairman was thanke'd for his work in connection with . the Main Highways Board and for li is other activities in connection with the county. —The chairman returned thanks. In view of the difficulty of transporting county plant to the head of the lake it was decided to ask the officer-in-charge ‘of the steamer service to arrange to have the gear on the steamer strengthened by January next. The council passed a motion of sympathy with the Government in the death of the Hon. J. O’Brien, Minister of Transport. The treasurer’s statement on the finance showed the debit balance as £2224 11s 2d pins accounts owing, £.361 6s Bd.» Outstanding rates amounted to £7639 Is 3d and outstanding revenue £llß3 15s Id. A statement of receipts and expenditure for thfe half year ended September 30 showed a debit balance of £2224 11s 2d. In adopting the report the chairman remarked that the financial position was satisfactory. Those present at the meeting were Or D. H. Cockburn (chairman), Councillors W. A. McLean, T. E. Bryant, D. Aubrey, and W. H. Thompson.
