QUEENSTOWN ROTARY
China Scene Described
For 41 veins a missionary in China, the Et. Rev. Herbert Davies, -Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, who was guest speaker at Queenstown Rotary Club’s weekly luncheon on Tuesday last week, discussed events in that country after the fall of Pearl Harbour. He and Mrs Davies were in Canton when the Japanese hoisted their national flag over the British Consulate and though he subsequently lived in internment in his home quarters, it was anything but pleasant. He related some of the indignities and annoyances to which British subjects on parole were subjected. Mr Davies and his wife were eventually granted extradition and were flown to New Zealand where they landed at Dunedin. He was accorded the clubs thanks for the interesting address. The overseas toast was given by Mr L. Evans. A vote of sympathy with Rotariau W. Davies in the death of a relative was carried in silence. The club decided to purchase £6 worth of health stamps. Rotariau Berne Woods, Nelson, was a visitor.
