Nurse Your Diesel

Send your problems to “Ariel,” c/o Box 434, Dunedin. Engine Missing Erratically or intermittently on all cylinders. May be due to improper fuel, water in fuel, or sticking noggle valves or pump valves or both. Valve Tappets or Rockers Faulty.— Loose in guides or too much clearance or insufficient clearance. Causes poor valve action, loss of compression, and burnt valves and seats. Remedy: Replace and adjust to correct clearances. Engine Missing on One or More Cylinders is caused by:- — (1) Fuel valve stuck in body. Remove and clean. (2) Air or gas leak in fuel line. Open nut a-quarter turn at injector until solid fuel emerges and tighten. (3) Exhaustor inlet valve stuck or broken valve spring. Free with kerosene or alcohol if possible, if not, remove, smooth and straighten. If still faulty, replace with new parts. (4) Leaky inlet or exhaust valves. Reseat and check clearance. (5) Fuel pump valves defective, or delivery valves weak or broken. Clean or replace as required. (6) To find out which cylinder is missing, slacken aquarter turn fuel line nuts at injectors, one at a time, and if engine does not slow down you have found the faulty cylinder. If engine slows that cylinder is O.K.
