NORTHERN BEATS WAKATIPU

Wakatipu could make no impression against Northern in a Rugby football match held at' Arrowtown last Saturday, the latter team gaining a clearcut victory by 17 points to nil. The teams were: — Wakatipu—Backs: R. Anderson, D. Wade, L. Ford (captain), C. Allen, D. Thompson, A. McLean, J. Spence. Forwards: G. Elliot, J. Inder, N. Grant, G. Douglas, F. Ray, G. McLaren, P, Ayson, L. King. Northern. —Backs; J. Butson, R. Timpanny, T. Collins, R. Dickison, A. Dickson, N. Stewart (captain), J. Burns. Forwards: K. Hailes, A. Collins, R. Cavanagh, S. Cooper, G. Rutter, J. Christie, L. Lansdale, J. Shepherd. Northern won the toss and kicked off with the sun at their backs, no wind and a ground in good order. A. Dickson, the Northern first five-eights, found a gap and went through, but the movement broke klown short of the line. ' ; Wakatipu had, several forward rushes but without success. Stewart, second five-eighths for Northern, made a very good break, but a force down resulted. A penalty then gave Wakatipu a chance to open the score, but the kick went outside. From a scrum at the twenty-five the ball came out to Burns, who sent on to A. Dickson, who cut in beautifully to score under the posts. Butson failed to convert. Just before half-time Timpanny ran across at the corner but knocked on, and a drop out was ruled, which made the half-time score 3 to nil in favour of Northern. Just after the start of the second half, Wakatipu came through with a good rush, R. Anderson being unlucky not to score. At this stage, D. Wade one of the Wakatipu wingers, retired with an injury and was replaced by J. Little. After the ball had passed through a number of hands, A. Dickson made a good run and passed on to Cooper, who scored wide out. Butson’s kick did not go the distance. L. Ford, who was playing at full-back for Wakatipu, was playing a good game. He was fielding well and kicking with accuracy. After a scramble on the halfway line, the ball came out through the line of Northern backs and back in to Stewart, who scored in a handy position. Butson added the points. A. McLean, Wakatipu, secured the ball within his own twenty-five, making a fine dash, but Jiis pass infield went astray. Shortly after this the ball came out of a scrum to the Northern half-back, Burns, on to Dickson, who cut in and passed the ball to Stewart, who ran Timpanny into position to score. There was much loose play among both sets of forwards, and at this stage Wakatipu forced a number of times. After a scramble the ball came out to Dickson, who jinked two men and ran round to score a splendid try to end a good game. Mr W. Hayward, of Queenstown, was the referee.
