Overheating may be caused by any of the f olio wing, causes(l) Warped cylinder head causing leak between cylinders, loss of compression. Head must be removed and faced up true and replaced complete with new cylinder head gasket. (2) Loss of water, caused by leaking water pump or pipe connections or faulty cylinder head gasket; pump impeller loose on shaft. (3) Faults in combustion chamber such as crack or blowhole, roughness, carbon deposits or carbon. Faulty Cylinder-head Gasket. Replace tightened down, run till hot and retighten. Valves Faulty, warped, scored or pitted, or carboned up. (Loose head on two-piece valves causes loss of compression and hard starting.) Remedy; True up in a lathe or valve replacing machine, grind to seat. Replace if too bad to be remedied as above. Faulty Valve Seats — Warped or pitted, carboned or other foreign matter between valve and seat. Causes loss of compression and hard starting. Remedy: Reseat with special tools. Clean and grind valve to seat. Valve Stem Faulty— Scaly, bent, scored, gummed or stuck in guide. Causes loss of compression and hard starting. Remedy: Clean, straighten, true up and clean with kerosene or fuel oil. Guide Faulty.— Burnt, rough, or loose in cylinder head. Causes irrcgulai valve action. Remedy: Clean out hole or better still, replace with new guide. , Valve Springs Faulty, weak or broken. Causes irregular valve action, and valve may not close properly. Remedy: Replace with new, or if unobtainable pack up with washers at cylinder end, not at tappet end.
