Outstanding Success

The annual E.S.A. ball, held on Wednesday evening last, was considered the most successful function of its kind held in Queenstown for a number of years. An, energetic committee decorated the hall with streamers, coloured lights and greenery, and the floor was worked up to an excellent condition for dancing. Over 100 couples took part in the grand march led off by the local president, Mr J. McDonald and Mrs McDonald. The programme which was evenly balanced with modern and oldtime dances, included a number of competitions. The first prize for a Monte Carlo Waltz went to M rHunt and partner, a lucky spot foxtrot to Mr Scott and Miss Sinclair, and a Statute Medley, to Mr Ussher and Miss Sinclair. At the beginning of the evening it was announced by the master of ceremonies that a prize would be awarded for the first couple on the floor for a certain dance, this was won by Mr G. Helson and Miss E. Muir. Full credit was due to four capable masters of ceremonies—Messrs A. Curtis, W. Smith, L. Forde and E. Anderson —who did not let the evening lag and helped greatly to make the event the outstanding success it was. The profits of this function which are to go towards the Memorial Fund were helped along by the patronage of guests from Cromwell, Arrowtowwn and country districts as well as a large number of visitors to Queenstown. Unlike many dances staged in Queenstown, when McNamara’s Gaiety Band of Cromwell closed down at 2.30 a.nn, a large number of dancers were still on the floor. The arranging and sotting out of the supper was capably carried out by the wives of the ex-servicemen.
