FOOTBALL NOTES

By Scrum-half

Congratulations to the Country Club for its win in the final of the competitions and for retaining the Teacher’s Cup. The final game on Saturday did not produce the interesting game expected and at times was little more than a scramble, although in the concluding stages Country produced some bright movements. Both half-backs gave good service behind their respective scrums and there was little between them on the day. Payne’s cover defence was a treat to watch. This player'will be unlucky if he does not get the selectors nod. A. McLean shows a lot of pace and was responsible for the try that turned the tide in Country’s favour. Although Country had the heavier pack, there was little between the two sets there being plenty of loose forwards on both sides. J. Murdoch’s place kicking has been a valuable asset to his side this season. With few exceptions the tackling on Saturday was deplorable. If Wakatipu is going to make any showing against Northern next Saturday this weakness will have to be remedied. Just a few hints for Wakatipu forwards selected: Pack low and tight and push with all your might, and do not forget that the player who jumps for the ball in the line out is the player who usually secures the ball. The Wakatipu selector, Mr J. S. Brown, has chosen the following team to represent Wakatipu in a game with Northern at Arrowtown on Saturday next: — Full-back: R. Anderson (Q.). Three-quarters; D. Wade (Q-), JAllan (C.), C. Allan (C.). Five-eighths: D. Thompson (A.) first, A. McLean (C.) second. Half-back: R. Payne (Q.). Forwards: Front row.—G. Elliott (A), L. Indcr (Q.), N. Grant (C.); middle row. —G. Douglas (C.), P. Ayson (A.), F. Rac (Q.), L. Forde (Q.) (captain); back row; B. King (A.). Emergencies: J. Spence (C.), J. Little (A.), J, Taylor (Q.), G. McLaren (C.), R. Cumberbeach (Q.), J. Thomson (C.), J. Dagg (C.).
