LAKE COUNTY MAIL No. 14. Wednesday, August 27, 1947. NEWSPAPER POLICY
With the reply printed in this issue, of Mr R. L. MacPhail (Building Controller at Wellington), to an article published last week concerning a controversial issue which developed recently at Queenstown over the allocation of a building permit to a Queenstown resident, both-sides of the question have been thoroughly canvassed, and a moral drawn. Most important function that devolves upon a newspaper is to print “ all the news,” and to make known to the public, as far as possible, the opinions, views and acts of everybody who is of public concern; and everything that is of public concern. A newspaper’s duty is to add nothing nor suppress anything, nor in its news columns, to print anything but plain, uncolouved facts as they can be best ascertained. The Queenstown controversy is a case in point. Equal opportunity has been given both sides for a bearing. That is the Mail’s policy. This paper is non-party, non-sectional, and has no axe to grind or favour to give. In all controversial matters —as in the one under review —the Mail will present every aspect “ with bias towards none; in fairness towards all.”
